NEXUS is more than doubling price

Updated: Apr 6

There hasn't been a cost increase in more than 2 decades.

Canadian Border Services Agency announced on April 2, 2024.

Starting on October 1, 2024, the cost to apply for an NEXUS card will increase from $50 USD to $120 USD. What is a NEXUS card?

"The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing when entering the United States and Canada. Program members use dedicated processing lanes at designated northern border ports of entry, NEXUS kiosks when entering Canada by air and Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States via Canadian Preclearance airports. NEXUS members also receive expedited processing at marine reporting locations." (US Customs and Border Protection)

What that means is if you agree to submit to a more extensive background check and interview, you get :

  1. A shorter special line when coming through both Canadian and US borders. This is for air, marine, AND car traffic.

  2. Bonus: you usually also receive TSA Precheck if your nexus is tied to your airline account.

  3. Bonus: A special trusted traveller line for security, even for domestic flights in most Canadian airports.

Is it worth $120USD?

For me, yes. It it is. Firstly, it is valid for 5 years. That means it's only $24USD per year. To skip airport and customs lines on a trip even once a year is worth $32 Canadian! I don't need first class, I just need short waits, and an aisle seat to be happy. If you want to support my travels and info, feel free to buy me a coffee here.

You can get NEXUS for FREE?! Sometimes! Currently, there are a few credit cards that will give you a free NEXUS fee credit on your statement. Credit Card Genius (referral link) has an excellent explainer of the entire NEXUS program AND a list of credit cards that will refund your next fee. I highly recommend you check out their site and search for NEXUS info and cards! They offer many promotions for free credit cards and lots of bonuses. If you haven't used them before, if you sign up with the above link. I get a little $ as a thank you.
